The Gen 2 R8 (Type 4S, 2017–2024) is the last naturally aspirated V10 supercar you can buy new-ish, and used prices have made it one of the best performance-per-dollar exotics on the market. But it's still a low-volume, hand-assembled Audi Sport product with expensive components hiding behind a badge that looks deceptively ordinary in a parking lot. A bad one will bankrupt you in driveshaft boots and mechatronic units. A good one will be the most reliable supercar you've ever owned. The difference is almost always visible before you hand over a deposit — if you know where to look.
This is the checklist I wish I'd had before I bought mine. Print it, save it, bring it to the inspection.
Quick Visual Inspection
Before you even open the door, walk the car in good light — ideally daylight, never a dealership showroom under sodium lamps.
Sideblades and body panels
- Stone chips along the leading edge of the sideblades and rocker panels are normal wear, but heavy chipping with touch-up paint blobs suggests a car that's covered serious highway miles or lived somewhere gravel-heavy. Not a dealbreaker, but a negotiating point.
- Check panel gaps around the front clip and rear deck — inconsistent gaps or overspray on rubber trim are the classic signs of prior collision repair.
- Use a paint depth gauge if you have one, or ask the seller if you can bring one. Factory clear coat readings are consistent across panels; anything wildly different points to a respray.
Wheels and tires
- Curbed wheels are the single most common cosmetic issue on used R8s — the factory wheels sit close to the curb and owners misjudge the width constantly. Check all four barrels closely, not just the fronts.
- Look for cracked or peeling wheel finish, which can indicate a poor curb-rash repair rather than factory condition.
- Uneven tire wear across the front axle versus rear is expected on quattro cars (front tires last longer), but check for cupping or feathering that suggests alignment or suspension problems.
Paint and glass
- Inspect the front bumper and lower splitter for stone damage and improper resprays — this area takes the most abuse.
- Check the windshield for stress cracks near the A-pillars, a known cosmetic nuisance on some early Gen 2 cars.
Engine
The 5.2L FSI V10 (naturally aspirated in the base and Performance cars) is one of the great engines of the last two decades, but it has known consumption and wear characteristics you need to understand before you buy.
Oil consumption
This V10 is not a zero-consumption engine. Audi's own documentation allows for oil consumption up to roughly 1 quart per 1,000 miles under normal operation — that's within spec, not a defect. Ask the seller directly how often they check and top up oil between changes. A seller who has never checked the dipstick between 10,000-mile services is a red flag regardless of what they tell you about "no problems."
- Ask for the oil level history if the car has a service app or dealer records showing top-ups.
- Check the garage floor and undertray for old drip stains, though a clean floor doesn't rule out consumption — it just means it's burning rather than leaking.
- A sudden, sharp increase in consumption (going from 1 qt/1,000mi to 1 qt/300mi) points to worn piston rings or valve seals and is a real repair, not routine top-up territory.
Carbon buildup
Because the V10 is direct-injected, carbon deposits build up on the intake valves over time — there's no fuel washing the backs of the valves clean the way there is on port-injected engines. Symptoms include a rough idle, hesitation on throttle response, and a slight loss of top-end pull. This isn't unique to Audi (every direct-injection engine has this issue to some degree) but it's worth budgeting for if the car is past 40,000–50,000 miles and has no documented carbon cleaning.
Cold-start timing chain rattle
Listen carefully on a cold start, ideally the first start of the day before the seller has warmed the car up for you. A brief chain rattle for a second or two on cold start that clears immediately as oil pressure builds is common and generally not concerning. A rattle that persists for several seconds, returns intermittently while driving, or is accompanied by a check engine light is a sign of tensioner wear or chain stretch and warrants a proper diagnostic before you go any further. Insist on being the one to start the car cold — don't let anyone warm it up before your inspection.
Transmission
Gen 2 cars came with the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch as the standard and dominant transmission choice (a small number of late Gen 2 Performance cars offered other configurations, but S tronic is what you'll mostly encounter).
S tronic shudder at low speed
Dual-clutch transmissions can develop a shudder or hesitation during low-speed maneuvers — parking lot creep, tight U-turns, stop-and-go traffic. This comes from clutch pack wear or degraded mechatronic adaptation values, not necessarily catastrophic failure. Drive the car through several full stop-to-crawl-to-stop cycles during your test drive specifically to provoke this. A smooth, confident car should show none of it.
Mechatronic unit health
The mechatronic unit (the hydraulic/electronic brain of the S tronic) is the single most expensive transmission-adjacent failure on these cars. Warning signs include delayed or jerky gear engagement from park to drive, unexpected gear hunting on the open road, and stored transmission fault codes even if no warning light is currently illuminated. Ask for a pre-purchase inspection that specifically pulls transmission fault codes with a proper Audi-capable scan tool — a generic OBD-II reader will not see everything.
TCU adaptation reset
If a transmission control unit adaptation reset was performed recently (often done after a battery disconnect or software update), the car may shift slightly differently for the first 100–200 miles as it relearns your driving style and clutch bite points. This is normal and not a fault, but ask the seller if any recent battery work, software updates, or transmission services could explain any shifting quirks you notice.
Suspension
Most Gen 2 R8s came with magnetic ride adaptive dampers, which are brilliant when healthy and expensive when not.
- Damper leaks: Look closely at each strut for oily residue or a wet sheen around the damper body and mounting points. Magnetic ride dampers use a magnetorheological fluid, and a leaking unit will show visible seepage before it fails completely.
- Bounce test: Push down firmly on each corner and release. The car should settle in one or two controlled motions with no clunking, no delayed rebound, and no metallic knocking. A corner that bounces excessively or feels noticeably softer than the others suggests a failing damper.
- Ride height: Stand back and sight down each side of the car. Uneven ride height corner to corner can indicate a failed spring, a worn damper, or previous accident damage to the subframe.
- Bushings and links: On higher-mileage cars, check control arm bushings and sway bar end links for play, which shows up as clunking over bumps and imprecise steering response.
Brakes
Depending on trim and options, you'll find either standard steel rotors or optional carbon ceramic brakes (CCB) on Gen 2 cars.
Carbon ceramic brakes
- CCB rotors are extremely durable but not immune to wear — check minimum thickness markings if visible, and ask for documentation of any prior rotor or pad replacement.
- A grinding or squealing noise under light braking can be normal CCB pad characteristics at low temperature, but a persistent metallic squeal that doesn't clear after a few stops warrants inspection.
- CCB replacement is genuinely expensive — full rotor sets can run into five figures — so factor remaining rotor life heavily into your offer if the car has CCBs and high mileage.
Conventional brakes
Steel rotor cars are far cheaper to maintain and, for a street car, offer more than enough stopping power. If you're not tracking the car regularly, there's a real argument that a well-maintained steel-brake car is the smarter buy — you lose a bit of fade resistance on repeated hard stops but gain dramatically cheaper long-term ownership.
Electronics
- MMI system: Cycle through every menu, pair a phone via Bluetooth, and test navigation. Sluggish response or frozen screens point to an aging MMI module that may need a reflash or replacement.
- Virtual cockpit: Look closely at the digital instrument cluster for dead pixels, discoloration, or flickering, especially in the corners of the display. This is a known wear item on early Gen 2 clusters.
- Reverse camera: Check clarity and color accuracy. A hazy, low-contrast, or intermittent image usually means a failing camera unit or a connector issue, not a huge repair but worth negotiating.
- Warning lights: Confirm every dash light illuminates on startup and extinguishes properly. Any light that stays on, or a message center full of stored faults, is worth a full diagnostic scan before you commit.
Documentation
Paperwork is not a formality on a car like this — it's the difference between buying a known quantity and buying a lottery ticket.
- Look for a full service history with stamps or invoices from an authorized Audi dealer or a reputable independent Audi specialist — gaps of multiple years or tens of thousands of miles between services are a warning sign, not a quirk.
- Confirm the timing of major services against mileage: the car should show 10,000-mile oil services roughly on schedule, and any major 40,000-mile+ service items (spark plugs, transmission fluid, coolant) should appear in the history if the odometer supports it.
- Check for open or unresolved recalls through Audi's VIN lookup, and confirm any completed recall work is documented in the service file.
- Ask for the original window sticker or build sheet if available — it confirms factory options and can reveal if the car has since had non-factory modifications installed without disclosure.
Common Problem Areas by Model Year
Early Gen 2 cars saw more reports of MMI glitches, virtual cockpit pixel issues, and a handful of early mechatronic unit replacements under warranty. Most of these were addressed under Audi's warranty program during that period, so look for documentation of any warranty repairs — a car with resolved early issues is often better sorted than one that never had a problem surface yet.
Later cars benefited from software refinements, improved MMI responsiveness, and generally tighter build quality reports. These cars trade at a premium, but many owners find the difference in day-to-day electronics reliability worth the extra cost, especially for a car intended as a daily or frequent driver.

Low-mileage, single-owner, fully documented examples command the top of each range. Anything priced meaningfully below the low end of its bracket deserves extra scrutiny — a low price on an R8 is rarely a bargain, it's usually a warning.
Red Flags That Should Make You Walk Away
- Seller won't allow a cold start or refuses an independent PPI.
- Service history has a multi-year gap with no explanation.
- Stored transmission or engine fault codes the seller "already checked and it's fine."
- Evidence of frame or subframe repair, even if the panels look clean.
- Title issues — salvage, rebuilt, or flood titles on a car this complex are not worth the risk.
- Oil consumption the seller describes as "a lot more than usual" without a documented cause.
- Aftermarket tune or exhaust with no record of what else was modified alongside it.
Getting a Proper Pre-Purchase Inspection
Do not skip a PPI on an R8, ever, regardless of how good the car looks or how much you trust the seller. Find an independent shop that specializes in Audi or VW Group vehicles specifically — not a generic exotic car shop and not a quick-lube chain. You want a technician who has a factory-level scan tool, knows what a healthy cold start sounds like on this specific V10, and has actually put an R8 on a lift before.
- Ask the shop to pull full fault code history, not just current active codes.
- Have them put the car on a lift to inspect the underside for leaks, subframe damage, and suspension component wear you simply cannot see from ground level.
- Request a compression or leak-down test if the car is higher mileage or the oil consumption story doesn't add up.
- Get the PPI report in writing before you finalize any deal, and use specific findings as leverage in your final negotiation.
A PPI typically costs a few hundred dollars. On a car in this price range, it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
